Coccydynia, pain and inflammation of the coccyx, is common after a slip and fall, childbirth, or even in chronically constipated individuals. This pain can be unrelenting and last for years and even decades if left untreated. Unfortunately, coccyx pain can be challenging to treat with simply a donut pillow and anti-inflammatory medication which is commonly ineffective. Our Doctor’s are all trained in the evaluation and treatment of coccydynia, Dr. Lauren Herschorn having trained with one of the leaders in the diagnosis and management of this disorder.
The coccyx, more commonly known as the tailbone, is the final segment of the spine, located internally just behind the anus. This bone is commonly injured in a slip and fall onto the buttocks, but can also become inflamed from persistent sedentary activity, i.e. sitting. Either variation of injury causes unrelenting pain while seated that varies from a tender annoyance to sharp/stabbing discomfort.
At The Oregon Hemorrhoid Clinic, we offer the most effective
treatment for coccyx pain, internal coccyx manipulation. Your visit will include a thorough history and examination which will help us determine if internal coccyx manipulation is the right form of treatment for your specific case. Internal coccyx manipulation is the use of a gloved finger to manipulate the coccyx through the anal opening, moving the joints to reintroduce motion, and reduce tension on the surrounding soft tissues.
